FROM THE GROUND UP

Surfacing a car park with the Trevor Harris squad

Let's have a look at what it takes to surface a car park

We recently laid a course of AC14 on this 1000 square metre car park with our Vogele 1803.

The car park had already been based using planings which we laid over existing type one towards the end of last year.

Have a scroll through the images and watch as the Trevor Harris Surfacing squad unroll the black carpet.

Here's what we started with! It was good, solid type one, even though it looks a bit ... rustic.

The first job was to machine lay planings to even out the surface bring it up to reasonable level to lay tarmac on.

Look at the height difference.  That took A LOT of planings!

On the day before we laid the asphalt, we went up with a few more tons of planings to even out the planings surface a little, since it had been left for a few months.

All this prep meant that when we laid the tar it went on beautifully.

Here's how surfacing day went...

The finished job

This isn't the end of the story for this car park, since once the renovation of the buildings is complete the whole complex, including the car park, will be overlaid with a brand new wearing course. Doing this as the final job of the renovation project means that the new surface won't be damaged by plant machinery and construction equipment going in and out of the site, leaving a fresh surface for the new residents.

By scheduling the wearing course last, developers can avoid unnecessary rework and save on additional maintenance costs, and this decision reflects a commitment to quality and consideration for the residents. But in the meantime, this surface will hold up really well and looks the part!
