At Trevor Harris we want to be confident that we are giving our customers a job that not only looks great, but is fit for purpose and will last a long time. This means that it is important that we go back and check on the work that we've done, which gives us valuable insights into how the surface evolves under use. All of our work is guaranteed for a year, but our interest extends well beyond this. Every road has it's own story, and we revisit not just to check our work, but to learn how we might do an even better job in future.
Here, we revisit a farm road we surfaced a little over a year ago, and talk about how we approached the job to make sure that the new road would hold up for as long as possible.
The existing road was constructed from a mixture of type one, planings and any other material which was to hand. Looking at the 'before' picture you can see how old road has been extensively damaged by water running down the hill. The road needed some shaping and a further layer of planings to provide a good surface for the tar to adhere to, and provide a solid structure which should not sink. Planings, made from the removed surfaces of other roads, are a great material to use for preparation, since they have all the correct characteristics and, being recycled, are also an environmentally conscious choice.
After the planings were laid, the road was overlaid with a 50mm layer of machine-laid AC14 dense.
To protect the new surface from the water that damaged the old road we installed a couple of cross channels to divert running water into the ditch.
A little over a year on, and the road still looks as good as new, with no damaged areas, sinking or cracking. We like to keep an eye on the work we've done, and will definitely be back to check on this one as time goes on.
